Welcome to the 580th Digital Photography Review newsletter. If you've seen a lot of stories about PIX 2015 recently, it's because it's pretty-much all we can think about, right now. With just one week to go before our live-streamed photo expo begins, we're all putting the finishing touches to the wide range of events, activities and interviews that are going to take place in Seattle and over your internet connection. A huge amount of effort has gone into this and, speaking as someone who's not been involved in all of the build-up and planning (reviews to write, cameras to test), it looks likes it's going to be awesome. And that's not a word I would normally use. Because of this focus, much of this week's newsletter is PIX-related, so I really hope you're looking forward to it as much as we are. Sony Alpha 7R II First Impressions Review The review is still in progress so, while we finish the last aspects of our testing and put the finishing touches to our write-ups of the camera's key features, we've published our First Impressions Review, which introduces the camera and highlights the extensive testing and analysis we've already published. Read our First Impressions Review of the Sony Alpha 7R II Countdown to PIX As the PIX expo gets closer, we've been counting down to it by highlighting the work of some of the photographers who'll be talking, instructing and demoing during the show. Click through to see who's coming and to take some inspiration from their work. Click here to join our countdown to PIX
DxO ONE Studio Test Scene The DxO ONE isn't the first connected camera we've encountered, but it's the first to offer a physical connection: plugging directly into Apple devices via a Lightning connector. In addition to this more immediate user experience, it also features a 'SuperRaw' mode that takes multiple shots and combines them into a single file with improved noise performance. We've added these SuperRaws, as well as the standard Raws and JPEGs to our studio test scene, to see what this genuinely pocketable camera can do. Welcome to the 579th Digital Photography Review newsletter. I'm back from a short trip to the UK, and I've returned to a busy office, as we continue our preparations for PIX2015 and finalize reviews of some outstanding cameras ahead of the busy holiday season. We've also been shooting plenty of sample images recently with new gear like DxO's ONE and the Panasonic FZ300. You'll find links to everything below. Video Field Tests: Putting gear in the hands of pros Just a reminder that we're continuing to add to our collection of field test videos, in which we put the hottest cameras and lenses into the hands of professional photographers, to see how they fare in real-world use. Our latest video was made in collaboration with dance and portrait photographer Gabe Bienczycki in the desert outside of LA, and follows his experience shooting with the Nikon D7200 in some very challenging, extremely hot conditions. Check out our full collection of videos at the link below. Explore our collection of video Field Tests Maui Style: Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ300 real-world samples posted Fall weather has arrived here in Seattle, so what better time to head for the Valley Isle of Maui? The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ300 superzoom, which features an 25-600mm equiv. F2.8 lens and weather-sealed body, somehow found itself in a suitcase. You can see how it handled the tropical weather in our real-world sample gallery. Click here to view our gallery of sample images from the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ300 DxO ONE real-world sample gallery The DxO ONE is a clever little iPhone companion camera with a 20MP 1"-type sensor and 32mm equiv. F1.8 lens. With an integrated Lightning connector it's designed to be used while attached to an iPhone or iPad, and is an easily transported little device offering a big boost in image quality over a mobile device's integrated camera. We've put it through its paces in the field and have a full gallery of real-world samples to show for it. Click here to view our gallery of samples from the DxO ONE Stand Out! With Capture One Our friends at Capture One are putting on their second annual 'Stand Out!' photographic forum, aimed at professional photographers. Stand Out! is intended as a way for photographers to get face to face with some of the leaders in the photographic industry, share ideas, and get direct access to new gear. Stand Out! is taking place in three cities, and if you're in Toronto or Los Angeles there's still time to register for events on September 29th and October 15th, respectively Click here to learn more about the Stand Out! photography forum Abandonment issues: The urban explorations of Russian photographer Ralph Mirebs You might already know the work of photographer and urban explorer Ralph Mirebs - his series of photos of abandoned Soviet spacecraft went viral earlier this year. His fascination with science and technology have fueled his photography, and he's passionate about documenting abandoned industrial spaces striving to always answer the question 'What was this used for?' See his work and find out more in our Q&A. Click to take a look at Ralph Mireb's work Art Wolfe: Swimming with the Humpbacks, Tonga, 2013 Art Wolfe has photographed living creatures all over the globe, but nothing quite prepared him for the experience of swimming with and photographing one of the largest animals on earth - the humpback whale. He discusses the challenges he faced capturing these incredible creatures in the South Pacific. Read Art Wolfe's account of swimming with humpback whales in Tonga What's coming up? It's only a few days before PIX kicks off, but we're still hoping to be able to finish up our reviews of the Sony Cyber-shot RX10 II and Sony a7R II before the show, if possible. The next few days will reveal whether or not that's hopelessly optimistic! Keep a close eye on our homepage to find out. Barney | |||||||||||||||||||||||
