Welcome to the 577th Digital Photography Review newsletter. Things are busy in the DPReview office. As summer begins to wane it can only be a matter of time before we have to start summing up the year that's already done such a great job of rushing past. There are still cameras to be reviewed, shooting experiences to be conveyed and, of course, the small matter of PIX2015. There's plenty more to come in the approaching weeks, but here's what the past seven days have held: A quick look at Sony's Raw compression As we've been working through our studio analysis of the Sony a7R II and realised we couldn't tell the whole story without having a look at the compression that Sony is applying to its Raw files, and the camera's habit of dropping to 12-bit capture when it's shot in certain modes. We've taken a quick look at the theory and the real-world impact these design decisions have, to set some context for our forthcoming analysis of Sony's 42MP mirrorless model. DPR reader wins a Sony World Photo Award We'd already featured Andrew Suryono's excellent image of a young Orangutan sheltering from the rain when we published a slideshow of stand-out entries from the Sony World Photo awards, back in December. Since them, Suryono has gone on to win his local 'Indonesia' category of the awards, so we spoke to him about how he got the shot. Check out Andrew Suryono's story Readers' Showcase: Gene Smirnov It's not just Suryono's photos that have impressed us this week. Gene Smirnov is a regular DPReview reader whose work covers a broad range of styles and subjects, and ventures from from black and white to dramatic use of colour. He talks us through his approach and his inspiration in this week's readers' showcase. Take a look at Gene Smirnov's portfolio Leica S (Typ 007) samples gallery We've already shot the Leica S in our studio but its makers are clear that it's not intended to be just a studio camera. We took Leica's latest medium format DSLR outside with its 70mm and 120mm lenses, to see what its 37.4MP could do. Browse our real-world Leica S samples gallery Sony Cyber-shot RX10 II added to studio scene The latest camera to emerge from our studio is Sony's RX10 II. The latest version of Sony's large sensor, long zoom model features the Stacked CMOS sensor we first saw in the RX100 IV. How does it look through the RX10 II's longer lens? See how the RX10 II compares in our studio What else is coming up? The Sony RX10 II and a7R II reviews are both entering their final phases and there are another couple of bits and pieces we hope to bring you in the coming weeks. A quick glance at the calendar and the busy demeanours of my colleagues reminds me that it's just a month until PIX2015. I hope you're planning to watch. Richard | ||||||||||||||||||||
