The Digital Photography Review Newsletter The most popular weekly photography newsletter, with over 400,000 subscribers Tuesday, August 11, 2015
Welcome to the 573rd Digital Photography Review newsletter. Plenty has happened on DPReview in the past few days, including a full review of the very impressive Olympus TG-4, the introduction of an all-new, shiny sample galleries interface, and the first in what we hope will be regular series of review summary videos, which we added to our recent full review of the Fujifilm X-T10. Dan and I also got out and about with two of Olympus's new 'PRO' wideangle lenses, and we made a video about them, too! We hope you enjoy watching it as much as we enjoyed making it. Let's take a closer look at some recent content highlights. North by Northwest: Sony Alpha 7R II real-world samples from Portland The Sony Alpha 7R II is one of the most talked-about cameras of the year so far. And with a 42MP full-frame BSI CMOS sensor, 5-axis image stabilization rated to 4.5 stops and 4K UHD video recording, it's easy to understand why. Up to now we've only had access to pre-production models, but that changed this week. Click here to take a look at our gallery of sample images from the Sony a7R II Rough and ready: Olympus Tough TG-4 review While most of the rugged cameras we covered in last year's roundup have received minor upgrades, the Olympus Tough TG-4 brings something big to the table: Raw support. Does adding Raw put the TG-4 at the top of its class? Take a look at our full review of the Olympus Tough TG-4 Olympus 'Pro' wideangle lens Field Test: Rock n' Roll and Skateboards In our latest Field Test we put Olympus's new M.Zuiko Digital ED 8mm F1.8 Fisheye PRO and M.Zuiko Digital ED 7-14mm F2.8 PRO in the hands of DPReview writer Dan Bracaglia. Dan put them to the test in some of his natural environments: a rock concert, skate park, and a beach landscape at sunset. Watch our video field test of Olympus's new PRO wideangle lenses The travel photography of HDR guru Trey Ratcliff Photographer Trey Ratcliff is known for imagery that couples saturated colors with dramatic flair and cinematic subjects. Shooting HDR for nearly a decade now, his work has been featured on major networks and is even displayed at the Smithsonian Institute. Read our Q&A and take a look at more of his colorful work. Take a look at the work of HDR master Trey Ratcliff Opinion - Erez Marom: Whatever it Doesn't Take One of the common ways landscape photographers seek to set themselves apart from others is to shoot from hard-to-reach locations. The notion that a 'good' photographer is one that pushes his or her physical boundaries - hikes farther, climbs higher, endures pain - all to get a unique shot. In this opinion piece, photographer Erez Marom calls this idea into question. Read Erez Marom's article 'Whatever it doesn't take' What else is coming up? Plenty. We just received a final sample of Leica's lovely new 'Q', which I'm hoping to get to myself for a few days, and we're also moving forward on reviews of the Sony Cyber-shot RX10 II and Canon's high-resolution monsters the EOS 5DS and 5DSR. Keep an eye on our homepage for plenty more content in the coming days. Thanks for reading! Barney
